Meet Marble Mischief 21: A Handcrafted Wooden Game from MTI Creations

Sometimes a new project starts with a customer request. Sometimes we see something that sparks an idea.And sometimes we simply think, “You know what would be fun to make?”

That’s pretty much how Marble Mischief 21 came to life.

From an Idea to a Handcrafted Wooden Game

We wanted to create a handcrafted wooden game that was simple enough to learn in a few minutes but unpredictable enough that you’d want to play it again.

The basic idea was easy: roll the die, move your marble and be the first player to reach 21.

But just moving from 1 to 21 wasn't quite enough.

So we added a little mischief.

Along the way, players can land on spaces that send them ahead, knock them backward, make them lose a turn or even send them all the way back to the start. Suddenly, being comfortably ahead doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win.

And yes, some of the rules changed while we were developing it. That's part of the fun of creating something from scratch—you build it, play through the possibilities, find what works and get rid of what doesn't.

Eventually, Marble Mischief 21 was born.

Once we had the game figured out, it was time to turn the idea into an actual board.

This project gets both sides of the MTI shop involved. The CNC creates the playing spaces, winner area and recessed dice tray. The laser engraver adds the numbers, instructions and artwork. Then everything gets hand-sanded and finished with a clear coat that lets the natural character of the wood show through.

The finished board measures approximately 5" × 14", making it large enough to enjoy on the coffee table without taking over the room.

It's also compact enough to pack for a vacation, camping trip, RV adventure or weekend visiting family and friends.

Simple Game. Plenty of Mischief.

One of our favorite things about Marble Mischief 21 is that you don't need a 20-page rulebook before you can start playing.

Grab your marble. Roll the die. Start racing toward 21.

Just don't get too comfortable when you're winning.

That little space a few moves ahead might have other plans for you. 😂

A New MTI Creations Original Marble Mischief 21

Creating things is what MTI Creations is all about, and Marble Mischief 21 gave us the opportunity to do something a little different.

Instead of simply making another product, we got to take an idea from the drawing board, work through the gameplay, design the board, machine the pieces and finally hold the finished game in our hands.

And now it's ready for your coffee table.
