How to Choose a Custom Office Sign for Your Business

A business sign is more than just a name on the wall. It is often one of the first things customers see when they walk into your office, shop, studio, or workspace. The right sign can help set the tone for your business and make the space feel like it truly belongs to your brand.

At MTI Creations in Middleburg, Florida, we enjoy taking a customer's logo, idea, or even a rough sketch and turning it into something made specifically for their business.

So, what should you consider when choosing a custom office sign?

How to Choose a Custom Office Sign for Your Space

Before deciding on the design, think about where the sign will be displayed.

A sign behind a reception desk may need to be larger and readable from across the room. A smaller office sign, desk sign, or sign near an entrance can be more detailed because customers will see it up close.

Knowing the available wall or display space also helps determine the right proportions. A beautiful design can still look out of place if the sign is too small for the wall—or so large that it overwhelms everything around it.

Make the Sign Match Your Business

One of the biggest advantages of having a sign custom made is that it doesn't have to look like everyone else's.

Your logo, business name, colors, lettering style, and even the type of wood can all become part of the design. A rustic business may want natural wood grain and engraved lettering, while another business may prefer a cleaner look with raised letters or a painted logo.

That's why we don't believe there is one "best" style of business sign. The better question is: What style fits your business?

Engraved, Raised or Something Completely Different?

Engraved sign

This is where custom work gets fun.

At MTI Creations, we use tools including CNC routing and laser engraving to create different effects. Depending on the design, lettering and graphics can be laser engraved, CNC engraved, painted, or raised from the surface.

Raised lettering can create depth and make a logo stand out. Engraving can produce a clean, permanent design while still allowing the natural character of the wood to be part of the finished piece.

Sometimes the best design uses more than one technique.

Don't Forget About the Wood and Finish

Wood selection can dramatically change the appearance of a sign.

Different species have their own grain patterns and natural colors. The stain or finish can then change the personality of the piece even further. Something light and natural can have a completely different feel from a darker, richer finish.

We work through those choices with our customers because the goal isn't simply to make a wooden sign. It's to make a sign that looks like it belongs in their business.

Can I Use My Own Business Logo or Artwork?

Absolutely.

If you already have a business logo or artwork, that gives us a great starting point. Customers can provide their artwork when discussing their custom project, and we can review it to determine the best way to incorporate it into the finished sign.

Don't have everything figured out yet? That's okay too.

Some of our favorite projects start with a customer saying something along the lines of, “I have an idea, but I'm not exactly sure how to make it work.”

That's where custom work really begins.

Make Sure Your Custom Office Sign Can Actually Be Read

It sounds obvious, but readability matters.

An elaborate font may look great on a computer screen but become difficult to read when it's carved into wood and viewed from several feet away. The same goes for extremely small lettering or too much information packed onto one sign.

We look at the size of the sign, viewing distance, lettering style, and overall layout together. A good custom office sign should look great and do its job.

More Than Just a Sign

One of the things we enjoy most about custom work is seeing something go from an idea on a screen—or a conversation with a customer—to a finished piece hanging on the wall.

A custom office sign doesn't just identify a business. Done right, it becomes part of the space and part of the story behind the business.

That's really what MTI Creations is about:
